How to type Amharic

Amharic uses an abugida: each Fidel character combines a consonant sound with a vowel order. Most phonetic keyboards let you type those sounds with a familiar English QWERTY keyboard.

Quick start in Jember

Enable Type Amharic with Latin keys in Translation Sprint.
Type a consonant followed by a vowel: selam → ሰላም.
Use the keyboard button beside the checkbox whenever you need a key hint.
For Windows' built-in IME, select Amharic and press Win + Space to switch layouts.

GFF / Keyman mnemonic rules

The GFF Amharic keyboard is designed for a standard US QWERTY keyboard and follows consonant-vowel input. When a sound has multiple possible Fidel families, use capital letters or repeated keystrokes.

If the letter you expect does not appear, try the capital key or repeat the consonant. For `ፀ`, the GFF guide gives `S S` followed by the vowel.

Windows Amharic IME

Windows includes an Amharic Input Method Editor that converts phonemes typed with a normal keyboard into Amharic characters. Add Amharic under Settings → Time & language → Language & region, then switch between installed layouts with Win + Space. Microsoft's example types k-re-m-t to produce ክረምት, and Enter confirms the word.
